What is molo.news anyway?
molo.news is an app for local news and events. What makes molo.news so special is that it bundles news from a wide variety of sources. Not only traditional media houses, but also local associations, collectives or social institutions are involved in the news production. The main aim is to reach people who are no longer or insufficiently reached by traditional local journalistic offerings. Due to the increasing economic crisis of local journalism, also in large cities, molo.news should also offer the possibility of monetization without competing with established media offerings.
Who is behind it?
Behind molo.news is a research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The independent project partners have no economic interests, but strive to contribute to the revitalization of local public spheres with molo.news. At the end of the three-year project funding period, molo.news is to be transformed into a cooperative. The project is supported by various media organizations and experts in public interest journalism.
What is the goal of the project?
The current project is designed to evaluate the platform in six other large, medium-sized and small German cities, following the successful development and test phase already completed in the Bremen area. Soon, molo.news will be launched in Leipzig. On this basis, concepts will then be developed as to how molo.news can be made available nationwide. In addition, a sustainable business model will be developed and income opportunities for freelance journalists will be validated.
